Introducing Euro-style board games to your friends

As an only child until age 10, I didn’t have a built-in playmate for games like Candyland or Monopoly. I don’t even think I started playing…Monopoly until I was in high school (and to this day I’ve still never played Candyland). Back then, I assumed games were either based on pure chance or required months of commitment like Dungeons & Dragons. ¶ It wasn’t until after college that, one fateful evening, we decided to attend a “board game night” at the Games of Berkeley. This was my first introduction to Euro-style board games. These games were complex with a mixture of luck and strategy.

The importance of a shared vocabulary

As an “expert” in my field (user experience), I’ve spent a number of years building up my arsenal of jargon. This is compounded by the time…I spent in academia as a grad student, and I don’t think I realized how alienating it could be until I started job-hunting after graduation. ¶ Terms like “user-centered”, “usability”, and even “wire-framing” all have different meanings depending on your audience. ¶ It wasn’t until the 3rd interview or so that I realized I still sounded like an academic instead of an industry veteran.
